Vinification

This was uninspiring on opening, but it kept getting better. As did its CV sibling, it gained weight overnight, became far more complex and finished very well. Surprisingly approachable, it still kept getting better as it sat. It filled the mouth and felt simply solid. Some aging won’t hurt. It still has room to improve in the cellar and complexity only comes with time. There were 15,531 bottles produced.

Aging

21 months in 65% new, 35% one and two-year-old French oak barrels

Tasting Notes

Quinta Vale D. Maria Douro Reds are incredibly deep colored, violet, dark red and purple, with a very high concentration of mature dark red fruit aromas, black cherries and plums, followed by the elegance of Vale D. Maria’s traditional flavours of raspberry. The aging process concentrates the original mature tannins of the wine and helps smooth its power, originating a very elegant wine with great balance and finesse and a long, fruity finish.
